Les Savy Fav

Our Coastal Hymn

Les Savy Fav inhabits some strikingly distant plane, one where later Jawbox and early Fall oddly coexist on mutually beneficial terms. Staying true to its title, “Our Coastal Hymn” wobbles along like an electrified sea shanty, replete with disco-fied breakdowns – in the end, quite an anthem in an anti-anthem way (of course). A deliberately erratic (read: syncopated), schizoid boxing-beat simultaneously carries and tumbles “Bringing Us Down,” guitars revving up all the while, but never quite flooring it, either – aspiring post-punks take note, please. As solid of a single as they come, and a mighty tease of the band’s forthcoming album.
