Hello Vertigo

RCA/Sid Flips

The media sheet for Hello Vertigo describes the sound of this album as “something new”. I don’t know if I’d quite agree with that statement. Further down the page, they boast about some of the big names behind the scenes. The album was produced by Don Gilmore, who also produced material by Eve 6, and mixed by Tom Lord-Alge, who has worked with Hole and Marilyn Manson. Hole and Manson were once edgy rock bands with plenty of angst and intensity that have since given way to overproduction and a more generic, radio-friendly style. I’m not sure if Eve 6 was ever an edgy band, but they are now swimming in a rapidly-rising sea of mediocrity, which in my opinion, is worse than being an altogether bad band. Hello Vertigo is not a talentless album, but it merely sounds like the flood of mainstream rock bands that are on the radio these days. There are, however, plenty of catchy guitar riffs and harmonies to please fans of Eve 6, Third Eye Blind, or Matchbox 20.
