Over In Glory: Favorites from Classic Gospel Groups

Peacock Gospel Classics

This release, one of a series of releases that includes full length recordings by Gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson and Reverend Milton Brunson and the Thompson Community Choir, is one of several various artists releases from Peacock’s very solid Gospel catalog . This release is probably the best of the “Various Artist” releases that they have issued so far. The other “Various Artist” release does include Little Richard and Louis Armstrong, so I might have to reconsider after a few more listens. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, though.

This particular release includes a dozen songs that fairly represent the early output of some of the truly legendary Gospel performers. It includes the Mighty Clouds of Joy (with one of the most moving commentaries on the war in Vietnam that I’ve ever heard), the Soul Stirrers (who gave us Sam Cooke), the Jackson Southernaires, Five Blind Boys, the Staple Singers, and the Williams Brothers. This release is also one of the more accessible releases of the series. Much like their excellent Dixie Hummingbirds release, it should appeal to many non-Gospel fans as well as any Gospel fans. This one is not quite as rocking as the Hummingbirds’ release, and might be more appealing to the Gospel segment. In any case, this would be solid addition to any roots-music lover’s library.
