Groovie Ghoulies

When late 20th-century studies are a serious major, oh, say a hundred years from now, the Groovie Ghoulies will certainly be held in high esteem as one of the most productive punk rock bands around. What is this, their twelfth album in ten years?

And as usual, their highest-quality punk rock meets or surpasses all standards. Recorded in front of a dead audience, Fun In the Dark features spooktacular horror punk songs like “Vampire Girl,” “Brainscrambling Device,” and “The Spell Is On,” which are all, of course, pierced tongue-in-cheek. A Groovie Ghoulies album is nothing short of a punk rock tour through an Al Jaffee cartoon book.

Then it stops being funny… I always knew these pop-happy punks were sick fiends at heart. They’ve put the film Outbreak to music, and they paint a moustache and beard on, gasp!, Carly Simon! And to top it off, there’s the happy ditty “Don’t Make Me Kill You Again.” Just consider this punk for the little girl who likes to pull the heads off her dollies.
