Dimmu Borgir

Spiritual Black Dimensions

Nuclear Blast

Wow! I can’t believe how extreme metal has become. The last time I listened to metal at any length was back in the early ’80s, when I was in middle school and thought Iron Maiden was pretty cool. Of course, I’ve heard my share of straight-ahead thrash and speed metal since then, but Norway’s Dimmu Borgir is another story altogether. Dimmu Borgir play an ultra-gothic brand of metal known as “black” metal. Their music combines aspects of speed and Euro-metal into a theatrical symphonic blend. While black metal is far from the range of different types of music I typically enjoy listening to, I found myself drawn to Dimmu Borgir’s music because it is so ridiculously over the top. I give the group credit for definitely not walking softly in anyone’s footsteps. This is musical overkill at its finest. Spiritual Black Dimensions is sure to please fans of the black metal genre and those who appreciate anything in its extreme.
