The Apples In Stereo

Her Wallpaper Reverie

Elephant 6/Spin Art

I love the title of the album, which perfectly sets the mood for the eight or so songs here. The Apples In Stereo, long noted for their work in mod pop, create the perfect soundtrack for laying back in bed and gazing at pastel patterns. The first half of the album starts out contemplative and exuberant, while the second half has moments of cynical depression. The songs themselves are scored by short, film-like instrumentals which only heighten the experience – reverberating xylophones and odd electronic tones that take on tangible moods of their own. I hesitate to curse Her Wallpaper Reverie with the term “concept album,” but it does work quite well as a half-hour listening experience, if you don’t get hung up on the sheer hummability of songs like “Ruby” and “Questions and Answers.” Top notch!
