Cheap Trick

Music For Hangovers

Cheap Trick Unlimited, LLC

This fourteen song document of America’s premier pop band captures the highlights of a four-night run at Chicago’s Metro nightclub, which had the band performing their first four albums in toto for what seemed to be a ravenous crowd. By focusing on their best era of material, the listener is spared any forays into “The Flame”-era Trick, and instead is treated to great versions of “Dream Police,” “The Ballad of TV Violence,” and “Mandocello” among others. Robin Zander’s voice still sounds as spry and commanding as it did all those years ago, Rick Nielsen’s guitars pour out the riffs that manage to be both catchy and crushing at the same time. Cheap Trick has aged better than most from that time period, and they have proven to be a huge influence on rockers ever since. In fact, two members of Smashing Pumpkins show up on this disc, but they don’t stand out, so no harm is done. If you had given up on Cheap Trick around the time of “The Flame” (and who would blame ya!), check this disc out. When Zander screams “We’re All All Right” at the fade of “Surrender,” the hair on your neck will stand up. Don’t know what effect it will have on a hangover, however.
