Crop Circle

A Piece of Strange

From what I understand, Crop Circle has been playing live around the Philadelphia area for some time now; this is a rare recorded outing for the band. Ten songs with varying levels of originality. mostly on the high side. “The Fever” is a reverb-drenched number that makes good use of a theremin, “Dumb American” has a wistful chord progression, a sweet violin line, and lyrics dripping with cynicism. “Got a Funny Feeling” is a spacey ballad, reminiscent of Ween in some ways. There’s a couple of cliched clunkers (“Aluminum Siding Man,” “Mr. Strange”), but the overall quality of the rest of the album more than makes up for it.
