Unknownwerks

The New Crop of American Electronic Artists

Astralwerks

When I drive, I refuse to listen to any music which uses the sound of sirens. I don’t need the stress. Since I listen to most of my music in the car, artists such as Shiverhead (out of Wisconsin) are doomed to my disfavor; if they were cat owners, I’d send them a cassette with samples of my kitties upchucking.

A compilation of names most haven’t heard of, Unknownweks takes some chances, and though they don’t score on all counts (at least not with me), they do pretty well. The subtle dynamics of repetition emerge on tracks by DJ Donovan (“Freon”) and Beat Pharmacy’s organic “The Next Big Chill.” Miami’s Metrodub ease into things with “Cut Up Music {Jazzy Mix),” not only a showcase of skills but a fragmented primer on the process. Good batch, guaranteed to contain “classic early traxx.”
