Herb Alpert will go down in history for several things – the cover of the Whipped Cream album that got a lot of teenage boys into puberty, and for founding A+M Records, but it won’t be for playing jazz. This is the stuff you hear in elevators, and you remember it about as long as the ride lasts. He attempts a muted trumpet sound ala Miles, but the only thing in common between the two is gender – not chops. Even backed up by Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Alpert sounds like he was asleep when he recorded this, which is what I’m in danger of becoming at the moment, so I’m just going to remove this thing before I drool on the keyboard.
