Onelinedrawing

Sketchy EP #1

Crank!

First Impression is a sort of high tone slightly more nasal Elliott Smith style singer/songwriter. This is Jonah Matranga’s first solo effort after a seven year stint as the singer for Far, and though the style is different, the level of songwriting shines. Practice makes perfect. This is a beautiful lo-fi indie rock record, full of emotion, but never melodramatic. Just real. The initial comparison wears off as Jonah’s voice claims its own space in my mind, and the lyrics demand to be heard. “My friends will all be famous/this world will not contain us…” and I just sigh. I could’ve sung this song, instead I just feel it. The music is strong but sparse. Melodics move against dynamics, and the guitar slides against the heartbeat of the drums.
