This is scary. Scary because the Zoobombs elicit a throaty rumble out of what by all means should be a high-rev screamer. Not that these Japanese chaps are slow or menacing – there’s enough boogie miasma here to go around and give the Zoobombs a definite reek of Bluesexplosion pantleg. In fact, tracks like “Mo’ Funky (pt 1)” easily tread on Spencer’s turf, while “Mo’ Dub” goes after the Dub Narcotic market share. The Zoobombs even pay homage to the greatest heavy metal band ever with a cover of early Spinal Track “Gimme Some Money,” all sloppy and live. Hey check out “Soul Bomb,” watch out Beasties. If there’s any cliche to be drawn here, it’s that the Zoobombs hurl it right back, with all the original defects brightened to a lurid polish. It’s greasy, mean and low and I like it.
