The notoriously blunted Austrian duo of Kruder and Dorfmeister have been working fervently over the past year. After releasing their critically acclaimed The K&D Sessions , the two both ventured out onto their own side projects; Peter Kruder releasing his downbeat jazz opus Peace Orchestra , and now Richard Dorfmeister’s Tosca.
Suzuki is a magnificent downtempo album, and unlike Peace Orchestra , doesn’t abstract itself too much. This album is all about thick, head bobbing beats, and heavy pulsing bass. The track “Annenos” has a very K&D feel to it, splicing old school ambient synth pads with slightly audible female vocals, and a funky drum loop, while “Honey” is an incredible orchestration of spaced-out beats, a driving bassline, star-kissed synths, and a sensual, spoken word courtesy of some unnamed female. “Ocean Beat” is a sleepy, sinister track with a subtly eastern vocal feel. Other notables include the very sexy “Orozco,” the dubbed-out “John Tomes,” and the melancholy “Doris Dub.”
Suzuki is a very consistent and DJ friendly album (I know I will be searching out the vinyl!), and although not being a holistic downtempo album, it’s a great piece of work from one of the true masters and innovators of the genre. Go get it.
