324 E. 13th Street #7

Drunken Fish

On this disc, the gracious folks at Drunken Fish have collected 10 of Kiwi guitarist Roy Montgomery’s singles. Montgomery, a New Zealand transplant to New York, plays wonderful, simple melodies that caress and soothe the oft-damaged spirit. Most of the tracks are austere guitar and vocal songs that stay far from the folk idiom. Occasionally a keyboard or bass enters the fray.

These singles are far from the distortion and drone trances that he is know to carve. 324 E. 13th Street #7 is mostly gentle and warm. He has a distinctive touch with the guitar that is similar here to the playing he has done with Dissolve. This CD also has the melancholy that pervades Dissolve’s songs. Montgomery offers a short explanation for all of the tracks in the nicely done packaging, which also features the artwork from the singles.

In short, 324 E. 13th Street #7 is a wonderful album to set on random for another dreary, wet mid-afternoon shower.
