The Squirrels

The Not-So-Bright Side of the Moon

PopLlama

The Squirrels may wield a sledgehammer when it comes to musical parody, but they handle that 20-pound pony with skill and grace, demolishing what they touch with pinpoint accuracy. The Not-So-Bright Side of the Moon is a send-up – start to finish – of a classic rock icon, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon . Arraying hiccups , jackhammers, commentary from Baby Cheevers, modems and more in their rendition of “Speak To Me,” the Squirrels let you know right away that this is no idle late-night brainstorm. “Breathe” takes on a loungy jazz feel. “Money” not only substitutes better sounds for the cash registers, but also seems to fade in and out between Pink Floyd’s ode to greed and the identically-named track the Beatles made famous. “Us And Them” takes on a funky reggae flavor.

This tine out, the Squirrels feature such luminaries as Kurt Bloch (Fastbacks), Skerik (Seattle funk-rock saxophone wonder), and the inimitable Tortelvis and Ed Zeppelin, courtesy of Dread Zeppelin. Not only is the musicianship on this outstanding, but the musical inventiveness goes magnitudes beyond most of the stuff you’ll hear on Dr. Demento. If you like your sacred cow steaks served well-done, this is your puppy.

PS – For an experience you won’t believe: Put Young Frankenstein on your VCR and start The Not-So-Bright Side of the Moon right after Gene Wilder’s credit. Coincidence? I think not.
