Death And Re-Birth – April 3rd, 2000

Springtime is usually associated with an abundance of new life, from flowers and shrubs to little mammals and the hatchings of egged-creatures. But as with anything, it is a constant regeneration that we go through, that ubiquitous Circle Of Life. Believe what you want about what happens while we’re not actually standing in our boots on this soil, before we arrive or after we depart–but one thing is certain. The going and the coming is never easy on those who are already here or never left.

I heard from Tampa Area singer Wendy Rich that a good friend of hers, guitarist G.W. Rose, had died of a heart attack late last month. Born October 1954 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Dallas Texas, G.W. was in the maternity ward alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan and liked to joke that it was his first “tour” with a big name celebrity. G.W. played on stage since the age of 12 and hit the road at 18, touring with show bands all over the US. From 1973-74, he worked with the Freddy King Group and joined up with John Lee Hooker in Dallas, touring for 3 years (1979-end of ‘82). Rose made Florida his home and toured with Lucky Peterson in 1992 and later with James Peterson. One of his last gigs on planet Earth was at the House Of Blues, Downtown Disney.

He will be sorely missed as a good friend and a great talent. They seem to be taken away so young anymore.

There may have been others who have passed on recently, but I’m only aware of one other tragic loss to the local music community. Brian Carion passed away suddenly a week ago, leaving good friend and business partner Ed Krout of Phat Planet Studios in shock. Carion’s vision for the state-of-the-art production facility was beginning to bloom when he was taken from this place. Services for Carion will be held at the St. Augustine Catholic Church, 375 N. Sunset Drive, Casselberry, FL at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 4th. If you travel North on 17-92 (North of Hwy 436) to Right on to Seminola Blvd, then Right on to Sunset Drive, you will see the church.

Service at the cemetary will follow—then lunch will be served at the church.

Ironically, April 4th would’ve been another birthday for my mother Joyce Futch, who passed away in December of 1993. That day of celebration for her was always muted by the anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. who was slain by an assassin’s bullet on that very day. Death sends up a cloud, life waves it away.
