DJ Spooky Vs. Scanner
The Quick and the Dead
This is the first collaboration disc in “The Meld Series,” on the UK imprint Sulphur. The concept of this set is to “combine a regular series of recordings to explore the union of one artist with another — dissolving expectations, in the hope of opening up a fresh wound in the sound” and who can better sonically open up a wound in sound than DJ Spooky and Scanner?
This is a very interesting, exploratory disc. The music here ranges from fuzzed-out downtempo (“Journey”), afro-funk jungle with R2D2 samples (“Uncanny”), droning ambient (“Ngugi”), to a piece created entirely from samples of cut up car horns (“Channel Float”). Intersperse all that with very short (30sec-1min) bits of noise terrorism, and you’ve got one of the best releases from either of these camps in quite a while. A fine addition to any collection of the more experimental electronic side of things.
