Why Do All the Country Girls Leave?

Binky

Whether it’s in her collaborations with Mike West or on her own, the New Orleans singer/songwriter known as Myshkin is becoming a potent musical force. Her new album, Why Do All the Country Girls Leave?, is quite a showcase for the talented, young artist. Myshkin weaves her strong lyrical skills through a wide variety of musical styles. Her songs range from folk to swing to polkas to Yorkshire brass. She even does a hot song titled “The Last Year” in a style dubbed Ska-A-Billy. Myshkin also displays new confidence in her voice, leading to gutsier delivery and a richer sound to her songs, then her earlier recordings demonstrated. As per usual, Mike West heavily contributed to the album. In addition to co-producing the record with Myshkin, West plays guitar, mandolin, and banjo. It would not be unfair to compare Myshkin to Michelle Shocked, Maria McKee, or Kelly Hogan, but she has really come into her own, and perhaps soon, she will be a point of comparison.

On a side note, Myshkin is contributing a percentage of her cut of the record sales to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The hotline’s number is 1-800-799-SAFE.
