Pixies Fuckin’ Die

A Tribute

Lifelike

This is the third or so Pixies tribute I’ve heard, and it has the best name of the lot by far. The selection of bands is mostly unknown, especially if you’re outside the Southeast (Lifelike Records is based in Atlanta), but in a way this makes it more appropriately edgy. Jarboe and the Trepaners sand down “Tame” from a heap of jagged scrap metal into a pile of dangerously prickly steel wool. Allison With One run “Gigantic” through a beat wringer, layering processed vocals on top of a variety of electronic approaches. Most of the tracks here fall into two categories, heavily synthesized versions or modern-day updates. The former generally have more success, but overall it’s an eye-opening set of interpretations.
