As It Goes

Asphodel

This is the first I’ve heard from Asphodel since they moved West. Not that it makes any difference; the label always seems to be ahead of any herd mentality anyway. Phil Crumar builds interesting and complicated structures out of a variety of styles layered on top of a hip-hop sensibility. “Cornerstore” see-saws between a childlike melody and some fierce rhymes, as guitar, beats, lap steel and other sounds compete for attention. “Wind It Back” is the missing link between Handsome Boy Modeling School and the new Jungle Brothers. Four songs, but a good four songs. Phil Crumar, whoever you are, keep doing it.
