The Deftones

with Glassjaw

Hard Rock Live, Orlando, FL• July 25, 2000

With the release of their third album, White Pony, the Deftones have hit the road once again, and along for the ride is the Long Island-based Glassjaw. Since their debut in 1995 with Adrenaline, the Deftones have been featured on the soundtrack for The Crow: City of Angels and at such festivals as Ozzfest and the Warped Tour. Through the years, they have gained a tremendous amount of publicity, making White Pony one of the most anticipated releases for fans of this genre.

I had heard Glassjaw’s release, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, about a month or two before this show, and knew that any crowd at a concert like this would appreciate and enjoy what this hardcore band had to offer. Their energetic stage performance, complete with jumping, ranting and raving, went right along with the powerful roaring vocal power of singer Daryl Palumbo. They performed songs such as “Piano,” “Lovebites and Razorlines,” and “When One Eight Becomes Two Zeroes,” which the crowd noticeably enjoyed.

When the Deftones appeared on stage, singer Chino Moreno wasted no time before he jumped down to greet his fans. While the crowd surrounded him, screaming the lyrics to some of their favorite songs like “Root” and “My Own Summer (Shove It),” Chino would attempt to help some of his crushed fans. As I sat down in my seat on the balcony, I could see the entire floor moving, jumping around to the intensity of the music. I’m glad I wasn’t down there, because I would have probably been sucked into a mosh pit and mangled by the insanity.

The Deftones are definitely a well-loved band. They played an awesome set of not just new songs, but all the old ones, as well. It was definitely a healthy mix of Adrenaline, Around the Fur (1997), and White Pony. There was something there for everyone, whether you’ve been there from start or just joined the club. Fans new and old all enjoyed Chino’s whisper-to-scream sort of style.

The only part of this show I was not satisfied with was that I didn’t get to hear one of my favorites from the new album. I had to expect that “Passenger” would not get played that night, because it featured Maynard James Keenan of Tool. I guess that Glassjaw’s performance made up for that one missing element to my night. They are such an awesome band. If you’ve never heard their music, you should. These two bands put on a great show that night – definitely worth the pricey ticket. ◼
