Buckwheat Zydeco
Ultimate Collection
Hip-O
The reigning king of Zydeco has released a collection of his greatest hits that takes the listener to the swamps with Creole music from his first album in 1979 to the albums he recorded for Island Records in the ’90s. Each track gives you the feel and flavor of hot Louisiana music, even from the covers of Bob Dylan’s “On a Night Like This” and Hank Williams’ “Hey Good Lookin’.” Guest artists include Dwight Yoakum and Eric Clapton. The rock and roll hall of famer and Buckwheat do a Zydeco version of “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad” that puts a new spin on the classic. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos plays on a couple of tracks that he also produced. The nineteen tracks that span twenty years come complete with a booklet that explains the history of Zydeco music for all the new listeners. The collection runs from blues to country to rock showing how Zydeco transcends genres and adapts all forms of music to create a style and sound completely different and just as vibrant. Maybe even more so. Who would think that accordion and spoons could make so many people jump? The CD proves the timeless nature of Zydeco, born in the post-war era infusing blues with French Creole music. You don’t need to be fluent in French to know ils sont partis means get off your duff and dance!
