The Avenging Lawnmowers of Justice

Ah, you gotta love DIY CDs like this, with the covers printed on the backs of pages from a play script. In keeping with their packaging’s raw materials, the lyrics are literate and often funny, but not above a lowbrow pun (“David Cop A Feel” for David Copperfield, for instance). The music is direct and accessible power pop with hints of surf guitar (the instrumental “Big Ass Afro”) and Byrdsian guitar changes (“Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah”) that are a good counterpoint to the sometimes downright odd metaphors (as in “Separation,” where the singer’s ex-girlfriend’s body falls apart as symbol of their relationship).

The overall feel is happy yet thoughtful, sometimes even wistful pop. Really nice smooth production that’s not overly glossy, and great playing as well. Me like. A lot.
