The Mooney Suzuki
People Get Ready
Usually I shy away from bands that promote themselves as garage bands, since that moniker usually denotes a band that can’t play, and to compensate just turn their amps up so loud you can’t hear anything but a roar and call it garage rock. The Mooney Suzuki is something else entirely. They are a garage band that deserve to be mentioned with the likes of 13th Floor Elevators, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and the Standells. They also are heavily influenced by classic British groups like the Who and the Kinks. The Mooney Suzuki also have avoided the kitschy overtones that weigh down many of their contemporaries. They do for ’60s British band/garage rock what the Gories once did for the blues; totally reinvent the sound, while staying utterly true to the roots. Not an easy task as pastiche would be far easier. As good as People Get Ready is, this is a band that just begs to be heard live.
