Underworld

Live: Everything, Everything

V2

It’s somehow strangely appropriate that Underworld’s last album that contains the dearly departed Darren Emerson (having left in late April) is a live one. Everything, Everything is probably not Underworld’s last album, by any means, but the sounds contained herein contain the original magic that made Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants, and Beaucoup Fish so incredibly appealing to fans of electronic music, and also crossed over to the anti-dance indie rock crowd.

Everything, Everything is a live, electronically improvised trip through Underworld’s music – complete with a hyped up, screaming crowd that affirms every song here with a boisterous introductory cheer. The songs sound very much like they do on their respective albums, but there are deeper, warmer elements involved – breakdowns are longer, introductions are warped, basslines are more profound, and Karl Hyde’s vocals take on a more guttural, raw, emotional intonation. This disc is full of singles – soon to be “classics.” Notable tracks here include “Cups,” “Push Upstairs,” “Jumbo,” “Shudder/King of Snake,” and of course, “Born Slippy.” A great, exhilarating live album, from a great, exhilarating live band.
