Geeez ‘n’ Gosh

My Life With Jesus

Mille Plateaux

Uwe Schmidt is one of those people who can’t sit still. Some people know him as Atom Heart, some know him as Senor Coconut. Now we can add to that list Geeez ‘n’ Gosh. Schmidt seems to have undergone some sort of religious conversion that has infected him with the clickhouse virus and a surface love of Jesus. It’s difficult to know how sincere this project really is, as the only references to religion are the track titles (“Salvation,” “I Believe in Jesus,” “Talk With God,” “Soul of Mine,” amongst others) and the occasional sample of a preacher or gospel singer. Whatever the case may be, Schmidt shows off yet another side of himself. He’s assembled skeletal structures out of minute clicks and glitches, and has barely filled them in. While it may sound reductionist, the music is surprisingly elastic and bouncy. Some of the tracks, like “Jesus Knows,” are very DSP-heavy, while others carve out a funk groove. Whether you buy into Schmidt’s new persona, My Life With Jesus is a worthy listen, and may actually bring you off your computer chair to your toes(!)
