The Glands
The Glands
Capricorn
On their mostly self-produced second full-length release, Athens, Georgia’s Glands touch all the expected indie-rock bases – and a few unexpected ones, as well. Head Gland Ross Shapiro sounds like former Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis channeling John Lennon on the opening “Living Was Easy.” “Swim” is bouncy piano-pop that recalls mid-period Beatles. The Kinks are an obvious reference point on “Doo Doo Doo Doo,” and “Mayflower” sounds vaguely Pink Floyd-like. But on “I Can See My House From Here,” the band borrows the beat and pumping piano bit from the Four Seasons disco hit “December 1963 (Oh What A Night),” of all things. The record also contains the straight-ahead rocker “Straight Down,” the spacey “Ground,” and the pop-folk “Favorite American.” The Glands appear to still be searching for an identity to call their own, but this one sure is a fun ride.
