Yee-King

Super User

Rephlex

A listen to Super User reveals an album that is typically Rephlex – broken beats and twinkling analog sounds intermingle like a sort of ’80s record collection collage. Just as things begin to make sense, an intruding force (beat, melody, sound) makes its presence known and changes everything. Matthew Yee-King himself is somewhat of an enigma, an evolutionary biologist slumming it as a website designer/programmer, and slumming that as a musical, digital pointillist. If there’s any common thread to all of this, it’s the sheer braininess of the work involved. You don’t have to be a genius to appreciate the tightly controlled chaos of Super User; it’s the musical equivalent of those moments in the classroom where things almost make sense, before the mystery unfolds and all that’s left is a routine. Highly recommended.
