Coldplay is a British rock outfit in the mold of Oasis, Travis, the Verve, and countless others. Although they are relatively new on the scene, their full-length debut, Parachutes, stands its ground among the best albums of that genre in recent years. In addition to the obvious British influences, Chris Martin’s passionate vocals conjure up images of Jeff Buckley. The best songs, like “Spies” and “Trouble,” are true torch-bearing ballads, similar to Counting Crows’ “‘Round Here” and “A Long December.” The vocals are sweet and the melodies are even sweeter. Parachutes is pure ear candy for fans of alternative/pop rock.
