What You Whispered
The title track doesn’t do the record justice — someone should have whispered to Mr. Wilcox that it’s not his best work. Part country, part jazz, tossed in a bowl of Neil Young/Barenaked Ladies-type ballads, this CD definitely learns toward a more mature ear. It’s almost like a romantic comedy soundtrack: You can direct the whole pseudo picture in your head with each new song. The tracks presumably about marriage, families and long-time loves drag it out, making the more vibrant songs, such as “This Tattoo” and “Rule Number One,” the saving grace. By the end you attain a certain fondness to the super-relaxed woodsy sound of David and Co. Having heard the whole disc in its entirety, I’m not sure if I’m ready to get married, take a hike, or do the dishes now. However, whichever I decide, I’ll have music to set my choice to.
