Drums and Tuba
Box Fetish [reissue]
My Pal God
Think of Tortoise and co. and what they did for the vibraphone. Now think of someone doing something completely different, but with a tuba. The incompletely-named Drums and Tuba (there’s a guitar player in there) pounded out this bass-heavy version of algebra rock about five years ago, and this is the first of two reissues from My Pal God. Between Brian Wolff’s strenuous tuba bass, Neal McKeeby’s pointy guitar playing and Anthony Nozero’s frenetic percussion, there’s never a dull moment as these musicians transcend whatever instrumentation they have at the time. Check out the frantic Raymond Scott sounds of “The Butcher” and the unearthly blasts of tuba nothing on “Loteria”.
