Theatre Of Tragedy

Musique

Nuclear Blast

Not sure what’s going on over at the Nuclear Blast headquarters these days, what with their signing of swill like Orphanage (see last month’s issue) and now Theatre Of Tragedy. Call ‘em veterans (four albums and almost twice as many EPs and singles), but TOT’s fourth and latest platter, Musique, strikes this writer as machine dominating man, as nearly every electronic effect known to human kind is used, abused, and bruised amidst a club-hopping goth-metal thump trumped up with dueling raincoat-runt male vocals and goddess-of-the-night female ones. Sure, keyboards and such have been game in metal for a long time now, but, seriously, it’s never been this bad – most likely, not even proponents of the genre are gonna give a toss. Maybe Musique’s supposed to be some sort of postmodern manifesto on music, but, frankly, I don’t have any more patience left to figure it out. Damn, thank heavens Nuclear Blast just signed Soilwork.
