Who has a voice like John McCrea from Cake, plays music like the Barenaked Ladies, and writes songs like Dave Matthews? The answer is one simple, rather inspiring individual: Jeremy Kay. Even though it’s chilly outside, this self-titled disc will put you and your CD player in a permanent Indian Summer. In some genres of music, it’s almost impossible to find artists who write their own material, and so when you find one that not only just writes his own material but does a damn good job with it, you take note. This is one of those cases. Another refreshing aspect of Jeremy Kay is that there’s only one sure-fire “love song” on his self titled release. In “Take A While,” he sings “It might take a whole life to find/The one you wake up next to can’t satisfy your mind/Take a while/You’re never gonna find another like me.” When you need a little cheering up, reach for Jeremy Kay, who’s a new and promising addition to Surfdog Records.

The fact that the band Slaves to Sirens exists is impressive, but that they live, love, and breathe to play metal takes things to another level. Sirens documents the journey. Review by Charles DJ Deppner.
