The Cinematic Orchestra

Remixes

Ninja Tune

Isn’t it great when a band’s name and title give you all of the information you need to get an idea of what they sound like? On Remixes, The Cinematic Orchestra remix and reinvent the tunes of Kenji Eno, Nils Peter-Molvaer, Piero Umiliani, and DJ Krust, amongst others. They’re following in the great tradition of Barry Adamson, Frank Zappa, and innumerable prog bands in creating soundtracks for movies that aren’t there.

Unfortunately, The Cinematic Orchestra doesn’t have the dynamism of those aforementioned. They tend to start with an interesting idea, and slightly build from there, lightly embellishing on the theme, and tinkering with the structure. The soloing, when present is fairly uninspiring, milling about for a bit before falling into the original theme again. This is great for background listening, but, when subjected to a more intensive listen, offers little in the way of dramatic tension or emotional release.
