Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection

MCA

Hendrix continues to be one of the most prolific artists in guitar history, showing no sign of flagging despite having departed the world of the living 30 years ago. You can interpret this two ways; I prefer to think that Hendrix•s so-called “garbage,” which has been slowly leaking out of master tape cans for three decades, still manages to convey the mind-blowing talent of this kid from Seattle much better than most of his musical descendents ever could.

In the Hendrix ecosystem, Voodoo Child fits in nicely as an introductory set, featuring a solid collection of studio singles (including some alternate takes) and a second disc of live material culled from several famed performances (e.g. “The Star-Spangled Banner” from Woodstock). Packaging is very nice, and the liner notes, while brief, are a good overview of Hendrix•s meteoric path. A nice gift, with some value for Hendrix completists in a previously unreleased live “Foxy Lady” (from a 1970 concert in Hawaii).
