Ovuca’s latest album represents a certain maturity in the Finnish electronic artist’s career. Unlike previous releases, with 70+ attention-deficit tracks, Wasted Sunday has been kept down to a manageable (and listenable!) 21. Within these tracks is a greater emphasis on structure, as Ovuca’s musical ideas are more fully developed into whole songs rather than just brief snippets of music. The surprisingly catchy tune “Afternoon Girl” features squeaky yet melodic bleeps and unintelligible, ethereal voices engaged in dreamy conversation. Other tracks, such as “Meltman/Meltdown Man” offer up a fever-dream hip-hop. Oddly funky vocals intertwine with melodic synths in a weave of beats, samples, and strange voices. The pleasant (though often tense) music of Wasted Sunday is a step forward for the braindance-informed Laplander — Ovuca makes the soundtrack to happy nightmares.
