What’s the Worst That Could Happen?
The title of the What’s the Worst That Could Happen? soundtrack is best read as a short riddle:
Q: What’s the worst that could happen?
Quite possibly the most useless compendium of questionable talent since the Deep Blue Sea soundtrack, this compiles roughly a dozen never-rans that accomplish nothing more than making the listener spend inordinate amounts of time pondering whether Sara Jane ripping off Destiny’s Child or Benzino copping Xzibit is more shameless.
Amidst this handful of nobodies, Snoop Dogg provides directionless patter (at one point just rhyming the names of all the rappers he’s friends with) and Queen Latifah proves she still has gallons of venomous and vital feminist ire• which is unfortunately buried under inappropriately pedestrian production.
Still notable is the hit single “Music,” where Erick Sermon resurrects the mighty Marvin Gaye for a loving ode to the ethereal qualities of organized sound that is both more articulate and affecting than the recent Madonna song of corresponding name and topic. I’m sure Marvin wouldn’t mind his voice gently filtered through such a touching epic, but I’m sure he’d have some beef about having it sandwiched between Nina’s mind-bendingly pointless, note-for-note cover of “That’s the Way Love Goes” and Dyme’s shrill South Pacific-sampling (yes, the musical) “Ladies Are U Wit Me” on a soundtrack to a terrible movie that nobody saw.
