Stephin Merritt
Eban & Charley Original Soundtrack
Merge
Fans of Stephin Merritt and his various incarnations – Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, et al – will probably rush out and get this soundtrack, simply on the power of his past performances. Be warned: this is a soundtrack album in the traditional sense, meaning that unlike the glut of “music inspired by” discs about, this sounds like music played during a movie. If you loved 69 Love Songs’ cynical yet heartfelt songs, then “Some Summer Day” will suit; if you like the sillier side of Stephin, then “This Little Ukulele” will sound familiar. Along the way, be prepared for found noises, children’s songs (“Cricket Problem”), and versions of “O Tannenbaum” and “Greensleeves” that sound recorded in another room. While it would be interesting to see how this music fares in the film, listening to this short (36 minute) CD is probably not something even diehard fans will want to do often.
