Engine Down

A Sign of Breath EP

Day After

The problem with most bands that draw upon the Sunny Day Real Estate sound is that they are not musically competent enough to pull it off. Engine Down are. This EP is irresistible, despite the fact that they don’t score many originality points with me, and they sound so emo.

Three of the four songs on A Sign of Breath were recorded with J Robbins at Inner Ear Studios. They, of course, sound first rate. The other song, “Retone,” which reminds me of an experimental Chokebore recording, is a remix of To Bury Within Sound’s “Two Tone.” Worth checking out.
