Welsh is such a lyrical language, about the only one that beats Portuguese for its sheer vocal musicality. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Welshmen themselves, sing mostly in the Queen’s English, but the influence of the tongue is clearly felt in their particularly soothing brand of pop music. Sparkling and resplendent with organ accents, a gently tapped snare, the occasional fiddle, the ever-present lilting melody and a richly-layered style of vocal harmony, their music sounds like the last moment of morning, the one where the day achieves a sort of supernatural intensity to its newness, before collapsing under the weight of all that has already happened and all that is bound to happen.
Well. I didn’t quite mean to take things that far, but the music on How I Long does that to me. All that sunshine and sweet dew … still, there’s songs like “Christina,” which despite the twinkling harpsichord and swaying fiddle line seems to be about an unhealthy (and lethal) obsession. Fans of gentle pop like Belle And Sebastian (or James, for us geezers) and subtle raconteurs like Momus will find something soothing and hypnotic about Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci.
