Also known as Clementine, 7th Plain, and Planetary Assault System, Luke Slater has now released Alright On Top under his own name.
Alright On Top is pure U.K. techno-pop, and features vocals not only by Slater, but also by The Aloof’s Ricky Barrow, who also co-wrote many of the tracks. It’s not made clear exactly who is responsible for the little gems like “I can tolerate you now that you’re not around,” that Slater deadpans over the high energy, bouncy first single “Nothing At All,” or the simple “She’s got a sweet and bitter taste” from “Twisted Kind of Girl.” Not that it really matters, speculation could keep you from truly enjoying “Searchin’ For a Dream,” a pulsing, sexy six-minute track that’s nearly intoxicating. It could also prevent you from mulling over the robot-voiced stalker relationship (“I can complete you/You’ve never seen me”) in “I Can Complete You” or guessing what Slater really means as he croons slyly with one eyebrow raised “I’ll settle for a cup of coffee/You know what I mean,” on the obviously-titled, “You Know What I Mean.”
No matter what guise he’s in, Luke Slater is more than “alright.”
