In The Pocket
A Taste of Blues Harmonica
Anytime you gather the greats of the Mississippi saxophone — James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Junior Wells, and Snooky Pryor, just to name a few — in one place, a good time is guaranteed for all. In The Pocket is no exception. Featuring cuts from various Telarc releases, this is 14 cuts of harp boogie, starting off with Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds) and James Cotton trading licks with the backing of Ronnie Earl (The Nighthawks) and Levon Helm (The Band) on “Mighty Fine Boogie.” “I’m a Steady Rollin’ Man,” with Robert Lockwood Jr. and Carey Bell, is a great acoustic number, as is Hubert Sumlin and Annie Raines’ workout on “Rock Me Baby.” Its unfortunate that no previously unreleased material was included, but hell, this is a great introduction to blues harmonica, if anyone still needs one. Blow on, children!
