Chaka Demus & Pliers
Ultimate Collection
Hip-O/Universal
Admittedly, when it comes to dancehall, I’m a bit more partial to the more hip-hop inspired stuff coming out now and the pyrotechnics of Capleton, Sizzla, and Beenie Man than the “old school” dancehallers. But, even with that prejudice, I can’t deny the fun times to be had listening to Chaka Demus and Pliers. They are, perhaps, the first strictly dancehall super acts to have not come out of roots with any longevity. And “Murder She Wrote” is one of the coolest songs ever. That and Dawn Penn’s “No, No, No” can still be rocked today. Not only that, but their version of “Twist And Shout” is the fastest selling single in British history. Pliers’ vocals are Garnett Silky smooth, and Chaka Demus’ toasting has influenced more folks than I care to list. This is a gentle sway of a good time – nice, frivolous, light, and fun – that will put that cutesy smile on your face.
