Fatboy Slim

Live on Brighton Beach

Ministry Of Sound

Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, calls the seaside town of Brighton home, and the liner notes depict him as somewhat of a local hero. A listen to this disc – a live set of mixed music – will clearly show you why. Cook is like a five-star chef who is intimate with not just the ingredients but the recipes, the menu, the china, the maitre d’s family, and so on. Knowing innately when to follow the groove and when to shatter it, Cook can make an hour seem like ten minutes if you’re working and like an eternity if you’re dancing.

Some notable tracks on here are the opening “Born Slippy” (Underworld), which is expertly mixed with Cook’s own “Right Here Right Now.” As Basement Jaxx’s “Where’s Your Head At?” begins to trample all over “The Talk” (The Clumps), the concert is halted to allow for some safety announcements, and the crowd is audibly disappointed with the interruption. Things quickly pick up though, and time follows its disjointed Brighton spiral through the end of the record, which ends with a nice twist. Though only a bit over an hour has passed by the clock, your internal mileage may vary, as noted above. Worth it for that effect alone.
