The Italian producers, Paolo Guglielmino and Jurij Prette, have no shame in their game. They love the funk. They love the disco. And they want the whole world to know it. And if you missed their 2000 debut, Funkulo, the guys have just released Hot Spot to drive the point home.
Tutto Matto’s sophomore effort is a light-hearted good time with bell-bottom flare. It’s a one-way ticket to the late ’70s – into the trippy world of H.G. Wells, Disco Duck, and Felix da Housecat. “Stay Forever,” the album’s opener, is a pleasant disco cut replete with electronic handclaps and the silky pleas of Anju Sherdu. “Last Minute of Funk” is a Chic-worthy jam, while “My Mum Would Tell Me” is reminiscent of Roy Ayers’ “Running Away.”
But, while delving into the past, Prette and Guglielmino have not forgotten the present and always have their eyes to the future. “I Love You More” is a sophisticatedly layered explosion of pure house, and “Peace” is an epiphany of a gospel house cut that’ll have your ass wiggling out of the pews. And “Inseguimento” is a riveting car chase between Barretta and Superfly.
