Like its sibling, American Psycho, the film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ The Rules of Attraction is centered heavily on music from the ’80s. However, while American Psycho delved into mayhem and bloodshed to a bouncy beat of mainstream ’80s pop like Huey Lewis and Michael Jackson, The Rules of Attraction does it to a more “alternative” selection. To wit: Yaz (“Situation”), The Cure (“Six Different Ways”), Erasure (“Stop”) and Love And Rockets (“So Alive”) all make an appearance. There’s also some ’70s stuff – Starland Vocal Band’s “Afternoon Delight,” Nilsson’s “Without You” – and even a dip into the late ’60s, with Donovan’s “Colours.” On the modern side, we have a driving electronic score from tomandandy (also known for their work on Killing Zoe) and a serviceable track from Milla Jovovich, who really should stick to “acting” in thermal bandages (as seen in The Fifth Element). I’m not sure how all of this is assembled into the plot of the film – it hasn’t come to this podunk town – but regardless of its function, it’s a fairly eclectic and solid collection of songs.
