- Rock ‘n roll is dead. Disco holds sway, and Niles Rodgers is on his throne with Gamble and Huff by his side. Studio 54. Sparkling disco balls, flashing lights, cocaine in the stalls, sex on the urinals. Disco Kandi oozes with decadence with that disco house/US garage herpes simplex swing.
This two-disc set explodes with the dance floor cluster bomb, “Love Theme” by (Love) Tattoo, a heart attack waiting to happen. T Ski Valley checks in with a Sugar Hill Gang-ish “Catch The Beat.” “Whatever,” a bittersweet midtempo by Todd Gardner & Gynisse, tugs at ye ole heartstrings. Fuel and Fac 15 serve up some tasty remakes with “Do 4 Love” and “Haven’t You Heard,” respectively. But the stand-out has got to be the salsa/house/disco scorcher, “So Much Better at Bad” by Latin Hustlers, which is more infectious than ebola.
The second disc has a couple of garage cuts that kind of dampen the future/past fun. But The Adjuster has a gem with “Breakdown.” Shakedown’s “At Night” is a bizarre ’50s sci-fi flick funk that’ll get you going. The swirling beat of Tim Deluxe’s “It Just Won’t Do” is quirky enough to stick in your head. Hakan Lidbo gives us a catchy take on “Chameleon” with “Bad Girls Go to Hell.” And I personally can never get enough of Layo & Bushwacka!’s “Love Story.”
Sexy, sleazy, and full of that sweet, stinky thing, Disco Kandi is a dance marathon for those with funky condensation dripping from their bell bottoms.
