Freaky Flow

Keep It Live – Live Drum and Bass DJ Mix

Moonshine

This is an aptly-titled disc: Keep It Live does just that, working on the “take a recording direct from the soundboard and don’t meddle with it too much” principal. Lifted from an evening at The Living Room in Toronto, the set is a frantic journey – there are minimalist jungle-tinged tracks, old skool raving anthems and jazzy DnB explorations, overseen by MC Flipside. Mr. Flow mixes hard and fast, with ultra-tight control and a real knack for punchy segues. There’s a nice level of background club noise, which adds to the intimacy of things without becoming annoying. Flipside doesn’t contribute all that much – his role here seems to be keeping the vibe going, although he does add some very cool vocal licks in appropriate places, and also delivers a heartfelt “Toronto will carry on regardless!” speech at the set’s conclusion.

The really good thing about this CD is the simplicity. Wanna feel part of a great night of classily hectic drum and bass? Keep It Live will do nicely. When the music stops half way through because Freaky’s been asked to turn it down by the club’s management, you know you’re listening in on a special occasion.
