Strongly reminiscent of G. Love & Special Sauce’s stylish hybrid of hip-hop and jazz, The Silent Groove deliver a fine soundtrack to any self-respecting hipster’s cocktail party. Formed in Hartford, CT three years ago, this is the quartet’s first release, a live set, no less, taken from one particularly well-played evening down at their local Sully’s Pub. A supportive audience pushes the band along, and The Silent Groove sound comfortable and relaxed throughout these 70 minutes.
Sometimes a bit too comfortable, perhaps; no one really enjoys longish café jams such as the extended “Freestyle.” There is no doubt, Live at Sully’s could use some editing. Still, The Silent Groove deliver with smooth elegance on an album that is better enjoyed running in the background than for concentrated listening.
