This 12” is a smattering of tunes from Soulive’s NEXT album that pays reverence to hip hop’s forgotten grandfather, jazz. In doing so, Soulive sets contemporary jazz to an altogether urban feel with guest appearances. On “Clap!” rapper Black Thought flows nicely with Soulive’s tightly woven urban jazz. “I Don’t Know” branches into neo-soul, as Soulive sets a beautiful, sexy backbeat, over which sultry singer Amel Larrieux calmly delivers. Talib Kweli rounds it out with his positive message on “Bridge to ‘bama Hi-Tek.”
Soulive takes jazz, and hip hop for that matter, back to its roots • the cloudy, urban clubs • by using inventive techniques, funk grooves and dance friendly hooks.
